Neural descending pathways from the cortical jaw motor area and amygdaloid nucleus to jaw muscles.

چکیده
Previously1), we have determined the various jaw movements of rabbits that can be evoked by electrical stimulation of the cortical jaw motor region. Jaw movement induced by stimulation of the neocortical jaw motor region was predominant in a jaw opening direction whereas that following stimulation of the amygdala was predominant in a jaw closing direction. Additionally, these two brain regions could induce jaw movements independently. In this experiment, the representation in these brain structures of each jaw muscle and the descending neural pathways from the neocortex and amygdaloid nucleus concerned with jaw movement were explored physiologically .

Control Pathways from the Subcortical Limbic Structures to the Trigeminal Motor System in the Lower Brainstem: A Hodological Review
The organization of the emotion-related somatic motor behavior, including jaw movements, is governed not only by the cortical limbic system but also by the subcortical limbic system including the amygdala and hypothalamus. GABAergic neurons in the central amygdaloid nucleus (CeA) and glutamatergic neurons in the posterior lateral hypothalamus (PLH) exert inhibitory and excitatory influences, re...
متن کاملMonosynaptic premotor circuit tracing reveals neural substrates for oro-motor coordination
Feeding behaviors require intricately coordinated activation among the muscles of the jaw, tongue, and face, but the neural anatomical substrates underlying such coordination remain unclear. In this study, we investigate whether the premotor circuitry of jaw and tongue motoneurons contain elements for coordination. Using a modified monosynaptic rabies virus-based transsynaptic tracing strategy,...
متن کاملSynaptic transmission from the supratrigeminal region to jaw-closing and jaw-opening motoneurons in developing rats.
The supratrigeminal region (SupV) receives abundant orofacial sensory inputs and descending inputs from the cortical masticatory area and contains premotor neurons that target the trigeminal motor nucleus (MoV). Thus it is possible that the SupV is involved in controlling jaw muscle activity via sensory inputs during mastication. We used voltage-sensitive dye, laser photostimulation, patch-clam...
متن کاملBrainstem Circuitry Regulating Phasic Activation of Trigeminal Motoneurons during REM Sleep
BACKGROUND Rapid eye movement sleep (REMS) is characterized by activation of the cortical and hippocampal electroencephalogram (EEG) and atonia of non-respiratory muscles with superimposed phasic activity or twitching, particularly of cranial muscles such as those of the eye, tongue, face and jaw. While phasic activity is a characteristic feature of REMS, the neural substrates driving this acti...
متن کاملNeural pathways for the control of birdsong production.
As in humans, song production in birds involves the intricate coordination of at least three major groups of muscles: namely, those of the syrinx, the respiratory apparatus, and the upper vocal tract, including the jaw. The pathway in songbirds that controls the syrinx originates in the telencephalon and projects via the occipitomesencephalic tract directly upon vocal motoneurons in the medulla...
